Preview
West Indies have not won a series in the 50-over format for almost five years now. That’s not a stat a two-time world champions would want to associate themselves with - especially a few days before a World Cup. In order to break that duck - they will have to beat a side that’s been having the upper hand over them for a while now in ODI cricket. But the good part is - it’s the same side who they beat the last time they won a series in this format in 2014. History will have no bearing in this tri-series final on Friday (May 17) as the focus still remains on spending time out in the middle ahead of the mega event but a win will certainly keep them in good stead mentally especially if they are to beat the odds and reach the knockout stage of the World Cup.
Bangladesh - The Asian side though will be fairly confident of clinching the title going by the form book. They beat West Indies both home and away last year in the same format and have handed out defeats in the two games they have played in this series as well. In both the matches - the bowling has clicked. They would have been pleased with Mustafizur Rahman’s comeback after the pacer picked up four wickets in the second game between these two sides after getting hammered for 84 in the first. Their batsmen have been amongst the runs too with regular contributions from the top four.
Match HDrmation
Match: Bangladesh vs West Indies - Final
Series: Windies and Bangladesh in Ireland Tri-Series 2019
Date: Friday - May 17 - 2019
Time: 10:45 AM LOCAL | 9:45 AM GMT | 2:45 PM
Venue: The Village - Dublin
And on Wednesday - they even went on to chase down 293 with ease with even Liton Das - who came in for Soumya Sarkar - making a quickfire 76. Whether he hold on to his spot or will the left-hander return to the XI remains to be seen. For the West Indies - Shai Hope has clicked – scoring a century and 87 in the two encounters – but the rest of the batsmen haven’t been consistent enough. Roston Chase chipped in with a half-century when these two sides met at the beginning and in the next contest - skipper Jason Holder supported Hope.
Even though this team will be bolstered by a few big names just before the start of the World Cup - these are opportunities for the fringe names to make a mark in case of an injury to any first-choice batsman in England. With just 33 runs in four games - Darren Bravo will be looking to turn things around to ensure he doesn’t lose his spot.
Team News:
Bangladesh: A side strain that Shakib Al Hasan sustained in the previous match against Ireland forced him to retire hurt mid-way during his innings. The physio will have a look at the all-rounder on the eve of the match and take a call over his participation in the final.
West Indies: The Caribbean side - which is yet to win against Bangladesh in this series - might go in with an unchanged eleven.
